A good George III silver galleried salver Richard Carter, Daniel Smith and Robert Sharp, London 1778 Oval form with a raised open-work cast border with wave edge, raised swags over classical urn motifs and male portrait medallions over open-work slats, the centre with engraved crest and shield armorial for the Aquitar family of London impaling the O'Caroll family of Ireland, below foliate garlands and medallions, on four cast feet with open-work slats and swags, length 50.3cm, weight 77oz. Footnotes: Provenance: With Mary Cooke Antiques Limited 2007 The Patrick and Mavis Walker Silver Collection The engraving shows impaled arms with crest: The paternal (dexter) arms and crest are of the family of AQUITAR and both Papworth's Ordinary and Burke's Armory identify the family to be of London. The maternal (sinister) arms are of the Irish family of (O')CARROLL of Ballynure, Co. Wicklow. The arms are unrecorded at the College of Arms, or elsewhere in the UK. Looking more widely we find the arms are unrecorded for the family in Europe and must conclude that they are assumed. There are very few records of the family name in the UK and most appear in the 20th century. There is one 18th century record of a Pedro AQUITAR, who in 1797 was taken prisoner by the British during the Napoleonic wars and was held at Fort Royal Martinique, his country of origin is Holland. The blazon: gules, an eagle displayed or, on a chief argent three pear trees proper fructed of the second growing out of a mount vert, a mullet for difference (Aquitar). – impaling – argent, two lions rampant combatant gules supporting with the forepaws a sword as the first hilt and pommel or (Carroll). Crest: a demi lion rampant or morally crowned azure, holding in the dexter paw a laurel branch slipped (Aquitar).
