Olympic Games 1908 Gold Winner's Medals Wrestling - Gold medal for the first place for George de Relwyskow (1897-1945; GBR) in the wrestling lightweight freestyle event in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Inscribed "Olympic Games London". Hallmarked "Winner Leight Wrestling (CAS C)". 15 carat gold, weight 25 g, 3.3 cm. Plus original participation medal of George de Relwyskow for the Olympic Games 1908. White metal, hallmarked "Vaughton", 5 cm. Both pieces come in one box. The lid of this box is embossed "World" (26 x 8.5 x 2 cm). Gold meal with small dents on edge (condition A-); box with minor traces of usage. Lid is slightly damaged (condition C+). The box was commissioned by George de Relwyskow. The third slot was probably planned to hold the participation medal for the Olympic Games 1908 which was lost. George de Relwyskow has been the only wrestler who competed in two different weight classes in Olympic Games and won medals(lightweight freestyle gold and middleweight freestyle silver).. It was only in the Olympic Games 1908 and 1912 that gold medals were massive gold.

Mit Randgravur "Winner Leight Wrestling (CAS C). Gold (15 Karat, gepunzt; Gewicht 25 Gramm), 3,3 cm. Dabei: Original Teilnehmermedaille von George de Relwyskow für die Olympischen Spiele 1908. Weißmetall mit Randpunze "Vaughton", 5 cm. Beide Stücke in einer Box mit Deckelinnenprägung "World (26x8,5x2 cm). - Goldmedaille mit kleinen Randdellen (Zustand A-). Teilnehmermedaille (Zustand: A); Box mit kleinen Gebrauchsspuren und einer Deckelbeschädigung Zustand (C+). Box wurde nach den Olympischen Spiele 1908 im Auftrag von Relwyskow angefertigt. Die dritte Aussparung in dieser Box war vermutlich für das Teilnehmerabzeichen der Olympiade 1908 vorgesehen. Dieses ist verloren gegangen. --George de Relwyskow ist der einzige Ringer in der Olymischen Geschichte der bei einer Olympiade in zwei Gewichtsklassen antrat und jeweils eine Medaille gewann (Freistil: Leichtgewicht Gold; Mittelgewicht Silber). Nur bei den Olympischen Spielen 1908 und 1912 wurden massive Goldmedaillen für einen Olympiasieg (1.Platz) ausgegeben!.

The lots have been described conscientiously. The authenticity of the lots is guaranteed if nothing to the contrary is mentioned in the text.
Prices listed in the catalogue are estimates only. The lots may be sold at higher or lower prices. Auctioning will start at 80% of estimate unless at least two higher bids have been received. Bids under 80% of estimate are not accepted by the auctioneer.
Bids are to be submitted in € only. They are executed conscientiously and without any commission.
A buyer´s fee of 19,5% is added to the successful bid. Foreign purchasers from EEC countries will be charged the German VAT. Postage, insurance and bank charges will also be added. Payment is due within 10 days of the auction invoice. The buyer is responsible for compliance with import regulations.
