HISTORIC INTEREST: a large George III Scottish silver nutmeg grater Richard Haxton, London 1804 Oval form, the whole plain polished, with cushion covers both top and bottom, standaway hinges, reeded rims and moustache thumbpieces, to the top an engraved armorial for 'EARL HUME', opening to reveal a fixed steel grater, the bottom hinged to reveal space for the nutmeg, length 7cm, weight 3.2oz. Footnotes: Property of a Private Collector This is the coronet and crest of the Earls Home (later Hume) and is used uniquely by them. At the date of assay (1789) the holder of the earldom was Alexander RAMEY-HOME (1769-1841) 10th Earl Home of Berwickshire. He was the son and heir of Alexander HOME (died 1786) the 9th Earl by his second wife Abigail Browne RAMEY (died 1814) daughter of John RAMEY of Yarmouth. He later in 1798 married Lady Elizabeth SCOTT (1770-1837) daughter of Henry SCOTT (1746-1812) 3rd Duke of Buccleuch and 5th Duke of Queensbury by Lady Elizabeth MONTAGU (1743-1827) daughter of George MONTAGU (1712-1790) 1st Duke of Montagu.
