R.D. Russell Possibly unique cabinet, circa 1930 Mahogany, fruitwood, glass, ebony pull. 178 x 114 x 37 cm Manufactured by Gordon Russell Ltd. Reverse with copper label printed The Russell Workshops Ltd., BROADWAY, Worcestershire. Footnotes: Bonhams wishes to thank the Gordon Russell Design Museum for their kind assistance with cataloguing the present lot and thus sharing their following conclusions: '... this handsome piece was most likely designed by Dick Russell (Gordon's brother and the main GR furniture designer in the early 30s), as a special commission for the present clients' family, and by craftsman in Broadway in the workshops of Gordon Russell Ltd'. R.D. Russell, or 'Dick Russell' as he was better known, attended the Architectural Association School, under the tutelage of Danish designer Steen Eiler Rasmussen, before returning to work with his brother in Broadway and where he became head of the Gordon Russell Ltd Design Office. He was married to the designer Marion Pepler.
