Rechteckiges, feines Mikromosaik auf Schieferplatte in Tönen von Weiß, Schwarz, Gold, Blau und Grau. Drei Tauben sitzen auf dem Rand einer runden Wasserschale, eine vierte Taube beugt sich zum Trinken in das Wasser. Guter Erhaltungszustand. Zierrahmen mit Beschädigungen.
Das Motiv geht zurück auf eine Beschreibung des antiken Dichters Plinius im Jahr 77 v.Chr., in der er ein Mosaik von Sosos aus dem 2. Jh.v.Chr. in einer Villa in Pergamon beschreibt. Das Motiv wurde so bekannt, daß es im Laufe der Geschichte immer wieder kopiert wurde, sogar schon im alten Rom in einem Fußbodenmosaik der Hadrians-Villa.

A FINE RECTANGULAR MICROMOSAIC DEPICTING PLINY'S DOVES, Rome, middle of 19th century. Four doves inlaid with various coloured stones drinking from a vessel, mounted in a later gilt decorated frame, the frame with losses. Good condition. The present composition gained its title from a Pliny's Natural History (77 B.C.) where he described a very fine mosaic by Sosus at Pergamon (2nd century B.C.). There is a dove, greatly admired, in the act of drinking, the shadow of its head reflected in the water, while other doves are sunning and grooming themselves on the edge of the bowl. Many copies were made of this famous motiv, allready a fragment of mosaic in the Villa Adriana in Tivoli is matching to this description.
