Von 1922 bis 1925 erhielt Cremer eine Ausbildung zum Steinbildhauer. Anschließend arbeitete er als Steinmetzgeselle und besuchte Plastikkurse der Folkwang-Schule in Essen. Von 1929 bis 1934 studierte er an der Kunsthochschule Berlin-Charlottenburg bei Wilhelm Gerstel. 1937 bzw. 1942 war er Stipendiat der Villa Massimo in Rom. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus der Kriegsgefangenschaft erhielt er eine Professur an der Akademie für angewandte Kunst in Wien und leitete die dortige Bildhauerabteilung. 1950 übersiedelte er von Wien nach Berlin und übernahm eine Meisterklasse an der Akademie der Künste, deren Vizepräsident er von 1974 bis 1983 war. Fritz Cremer gehört zu den bedeutendsten deutschen Bildhauern der jüngeren Vergangenheit. - Die Werkgruppe der Akte und Liebespaare bildet im Schaffen Fritz Cremers das thematische Pendant zu den politischen Auftragswerken. Sie dient ihm zur Beruhigung und als Rückzug ins Private. - From 1922 to 1925 training as a stone sculptor. In 1950 he moved from Vienna to Berlin and took a master class at the Academy of Arts, whose vice president he was from 1974 to 1983. Fritz Cremer is one of the most important German sculptors of the recent past.
