Spanish school; second half of the 17th century.
"Saint Anthony Abbot".
Polychrome carved wood.
It presents faults in the polychromy and in the carving.
It has damage caused by xylophages.
Measurements: 52 x 30 x 12 cm.
Saint Anthony is represented following his basic iconography, with the hooded sackcloth typical of the Antonines and a long beard. The canon is stylised and the face is bony and expressive. His waist, far from being hieratic, adopts a slight movement due to the bending of one knee, which favours the naturalistic play of the folds of the tunic. Worked in the round, the carver shows great skill in the rendering of the different qualities.
According to legend, Saint Anthony Abbot was born in Egypt in 251, and at a very young age he retired to the solitude of the desert. The Order of the Antonines was founded in the 11th century under the patronage of Saint Anthony as a holy healer. In order to maintain their commendations and hospitals, the Antonines raised pigs. They enjoyed the privilege of letting their animals, recognisable by the bell that jingled on their necks, roam the streets of the villages and the communal lands. Hence one of the most popular attributes of the saint is a pig with a cowbell around its neck. Baroque sculpture is one of the most authentic and personal examples of our art, because its conception and form of expression arose from the people and the deepest feelings that nestled in them. With the economy of the State in ruins, the nobility in decline and the high clergy burdened with heavy taxes, it was the monasteries, parishes and confraternities of clerics and laymen who promoted its development, with the works sometimes being financed by popular subscription. Sculpture was thus forced to reflect the prevailing ideals in these environments, which were none other than religious ideals, at a time when Counter-Reformation doctrine demanded a realistic language from art so that the faithful could understand and identify with what was represented.
